Wooden churches

03. Jedlinka

The wooden Greek Catholic church of the Protection of the Theotokos, 1763, NKP

The ancient village of Jedlinka is known for its wooden church of Byzantine rite. It is dedicated to the Protection of the Theotokos. The church was built in 1763, and according to the legend, was brought from Poland.
The construction of the church is rustic. The church has three parts, three spaces, three towers and three crosses. All three towers are onion-shaped. Of interest in this church are the preserved original forged crosses, metal work on doors and gratings of the windows.
The entrance is on the west. All three parts of the church, i.e. narthex, nave and sanctuary are equipped with small windows. The Sanctuary and nave are divided by one of the most decorated iconostases in Slovakia. It dates to the 18th century and has four rows. First main row contains icons of St. Nicholas, Theotokos (Hodigitria), Christ the Teacher and icon of the patron feast of the Protection of the Theotokos. The Royal doors are adorned with medallions of the Annunciation and four Evangelists. Second row of icons represents various feasts of the liturgical year. It is divided by the icon of the Last (Mystical) Supper. Third row consists of the icons of the apostles. In the middle is the main icon of Christ the High Priest. Above is a rarely used element - the Divine eye. Fourth row represents individual prophets. The top of the iconostasis is finished by the Crucifixion with the Theotokos and St. John the Evangelist.
In the church are also other icons and liturgical artifacts from 17th and 18th century.
The church in Jedlinka was completely renovated in 2000 - 2001.
