Wooden churches

06. Lukov - Venécia

The wooden Greek Catholic church of the Ss. Cosmas and Damian, 1708, NKP

The wooden filial church in Lukov - Venécia was built in 1708 - 1709 on a cemetery property. Approximately thirty years later, in 1740, it was rebuilt and renovated. It is dedicated to Ss. Cosmas and Damian. Thanks to its stone substaining wall, the church building equals the steep hill, on which is built. This slope was used to build a basement under the sanctuary, what is a real rarity among the wooden churches.
The whole building has rustic construction, divided into three parts, three spaces, and three towers with three crosses. In the main, tallest tower are bells from the years 1755 and 1886. Unusual for a church is the entrance from the southern part, installed on the side, at the roofed patio, instead of the entrance from the western part as usual in the majority of wooden churches.
Most of the icons in the church are concentrated on the iconostasis, which has four rows. The iconostasis is from the 18th century. The main (first) row consists of the icons of Holy Father Nicholas, Theotokos (Hodigitria), Christ the Teacher and icon of Ss. Cosmas and Damian. Deaconal doors are not set, royal ones have six medallions, depicting the scene of the Annunciation and four Evangelists. Second row of feasts contains medallions of single feasts, which is not typical. In the middle of the row is the icon Veraicon, instead of the icon of the Last (Mystical) Supper. Third, apostolic row contains six icons with pairs of figures, with Christ the High Priest in the middle. The fourth row spans two levels, consisting of twelve medallions of prophets. In extensions are six medallions of Old Testament prophets. On the top of the iconostasis is the Crucifixion with the figures of Theotokos and St. John the Evangelist on the sides.
Complex renovation took place in 2005 – 2006. Renovation of the iconostasis started in 2005.
