The wooden Greek Catholic church of the Holy Evangelist Luke, 1739, NKP
The wooden church of Byzantine rite in Tročany is under the patronage of the Holy Evangelist Luke.
It was built in 1739. We presume that the church originated on the site of an older church from 1338. No records were preserved about the reasons and time of deterioration of this older church.
The rustic construction of the church is built on low foundation and consists of three spaces, sanctuary, nave and narthex. Above the narthex is a massive tower with conic ending. On the exterior, the tower is almost entirely covered with shingles. Originally, were two bells in the tower, one of them dated most likely the 14th century. Presently only one bell remains in the tower. The doors (entrance) to the church are original.
The iconostasis is simple; however, this simplicity does not diminish its value. These Icons were written between the 16th and 18th century. The Iconostasis has two rows. Instead of a first row, the icons of the Holy Father Nicholas, Theotokos (Hodigitria), Christ the Teacher are hanging and above them hangs a smaller icon of the Holy Evangelist Luke. Deaconal doors are not set, royal doors are also simple, without Annunciation and without Evangelists. Above them is a Mandylion. Second row is completely missing. Third, apostolic row has Christ the High Priest in the middle, Theotokos and St. John the Baptist. Fourth row of prophets consists of wide strip of God’s Incarnation with angels on the sides. Only a few of the prophets can be properly identified. Above the fourth row are on both sides icons of the Crucifixion and Theotokos (Hodigitria). In the fifth row is the icon of the Holy Father Nicholas and Christ with a cross.
In the nave are also hanging other valuable icons from different time periods.
The church was renovated and underwent major changes in 1897, 1933 and 1968.
