The wooden Greek Catholic church of St. John the Baptist, 1750, NKP
Wooden Greek Catholic Church in Kalná Roztoka (an 18th century church) was built a in the year 1750. It is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Wooden church is currently “in a fur coat”, as it is plastered and bleached with lime in order to protect the church before bad weather.
Even despite the fact that plaster forms the impression of compact bricked building, this is a church with three parts, three spaces, one tower and two crosses. Structure is classic, rustic, the tower has columned structure. The entire roof of the church as well as the tower are covered with shingles. On the onion dome of the tower is three-barred cross. The entrance to the church is on the western part, leading through the narthex.
An ornamentally carved iconostasis divides the individual parts of the church. It has architecture of five rows, displayed on five levels, and is dated to the end of the 17th century; some of the icons being from the 18th century. First, main row consists of the icons of St. Nicholas, Theotokos (Hodigitria), Christ the Teacher and icon of St. John the Baptist, patron of the church. Deaconal doors have no leaves. Royal doors with two leaves are adorned with six medallions, four Evangelists in the bottom part, and the Annunciation in the upper part. Following is the second row, row of feasts, in the middle with the icon of the Last (Mystical) Supper with twelve apostles. Third, apostolic row contains the icons of apostles; in the middle is the icon of Christ the High Priest with the Theotokos and St. John. Fourth row of prophets consists of six medallions with pairs of figures. The top of the iconostasis is missing. Fifth row, i.e. icons under the main row contains the icons of: Christ appearing to St. Nicholas, Ss. Peter and Paul. The church was renovated for the first time in 1839.
Belfry (National cultural monument – NKP) – Near the church is wooden belfry with two bells, one being from 1908, the other one from 1933. The building of the belfry stands in low stone foundation with very simple structure. The upper part is covered with shingles and is finished with three-barred cross.
Renovation of the belfry took place in 1988 - 1989. Last complete renovations of the church and belfry were done in 2002 - 2004.
